Classy Class C!
By Norm Rosen
We had the pleasure of road testing the 2018 Coachmen Leprechaun 201 RS motorhome with a team from Motor Home Travel, of Bolton, Ontario. Motor Home Travel retails these units and operates several of the coaches as part of their rental fleet. We took out one of the 210 RS models for a tour through the rolling hills in the Bolton, Ontario area, and then headed south to the Niagara escarpment, stopping for a photo shoot in the beautiful Kelso Conservation Area, just west of Milton, Ontario.
On The Road…
The Leprechaun 210 RS is a 24-foot class C motorhome that is engineered to provide an ideal combination of interior comfort and compact exterior dimensions. Riding on a Ford E-350 Super Duty chassis, the motorhome negotiated the twisting roads with ease, and the handling in the campground setting was excellent – the 158-inch wheelbase is long enough to provide a comfortable ride on the highway and short enough to provide the agility that you need for tight campsite roads.
With a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 12,500 pounds and a GCWR (gross combined weight rating) of 18,500 pounds, you have more than enough capacity to carry your passengers and gear, and tow a small car or a utility trailer. The Air Assist rear suspension adds to the handling of the motorhome, letting you adapt the ride to the load.
Climbing into the cab is easy, with running boards on both the driver and passenger side of the vehicle. The Leprechaun is a driver’s delight, with Coachmen RV’s Deluxe Chassis Package that includes cruise control, supremely comfortable reclining driver and navigator seats, tilt steering wheel, in-dash A/C, and power windows and locks. Visibility is excellent with a tinted front windshield, large exterior mirrors, and optional rear vision system.
In the Campground…
Once you arrive at your campsite, hooking up the Leprechaun takes only a few minutes. If your vehicle is equipped with the power stabilizer jacks, just set your parking brake, and then lower the jacks. Take a minute to connect the 30-AMP power cord, the campground water hookup, and the sewer hose. With these hookups in place, you are ready to extend your slides, and the 15-foot power patio awning – these components extend and retract in seconds at the touch of a switch – what could be easier!
The Leprechaun has a very efficient electrical system, with a 55 AMP electronic converter, auxiliary battery, battery disconnect, auto generator changeover, and GFI circuit.
The coach has a well-planned hookup compartment, and you can enjoy a satellite TV hookup or cable TV by connecting the coaxial cable, or just rely on the Jack Wing TV antenna.
Dry Camping…
For adventures that take you to areas where fully serviced campgrounds may not be available, the Leprechaun features a 50-gal. fresh water tank, a 28-gal. grey water tank, and a 31-gal. black water tank. This should be sufficient for several days of “dry camping” for the average family, perhaps as much as a week if you and your family are careful with the water usage.
The Leprechaun also features a standard Onan 4KW generator – a very welcome addition to a motorhome, and an excellent upgrade for active RV travellers. The Onan draws fuel from the vehicle gas tank, but the supply line is placed in the tank in such a way as to prevent the generator from operating when your fuel level drops below one quarter-tank.
Construction
Coachmen builds the Leprechaun with a Vacu-Bond laminated aluminum framed floor with dual-layer floor decking design, and Vacu-Bond laminated 2” aluminum framed sidewalls. The crowned roof is also Vacu-Bond laminated, and features a TPO surface layer. The cabover bunk area and the bunk floor are aluminum framed for strength and durability.
While many RV manufacturers leave their storage compartments essentially unfinished, Coachmen RV uses a Roto-Cast manufacturing method to create exterior warehouse storage compartments that will withstand the everyday wear and tear of transporting your gear.
One of the exterior compartments is fitted with a “Water Works” panel, placing all of your water system hookups in one convenient place. This includes your black water tank flush components. Your RV water system includes a 6-gallon gas electronic ignition water heater, and there is a low point drain and “Easy Winterize” valve. The plumbing in this coach utilizes PEX fresh water lines and HEPvO drain valves.
The Leprechaun is one of Coachmen RV’s “Certified Green” products, achieving a “Gold” level for efficient production methods as well as efficient and healthy materials. Check out this very important aspect of RV manufacturing at www.certifiedgreenrvs.com
Coachmen builds the Leprechaun to last, with laminated fibreglass sidewalls, and a six-layer vacuum bonded floor.
The use of Azdel composite material in the laminated walls of this motorhome delivers many advantages over traditional wood material – the Azdel composite is impervious to water – that means you will not have to deal with rot, mold, or water damage. The material is 50% lighter than wood, and provides three times the insulation value… it is also sound and energy absorbent, and impact and puncture resistant.
State-of-the-Art Components
It is amazing to see how many modern innovations the RV industry has to offer, and the Leprechaun is an excellent example of a vehicle that has evolved at the pace of technology.
For those who are energy conscious and eager to adapt to the latest environmental and ecological benefits available in today’s RV models, Coachmen has provided a Solar Panel Connection Port, and installed LED lighting throughout the motorhome – including the interior lights, exterior lights, patio LED light strip, and the vehicle tail and running lights.
On a practical note, the bedroom is equipped with 110V receptacles and the area is CPAP ready. There are also 12V connections and a USB charging station.
Standard Features
The Leprechaun 210 RS has a “Value Leader” package that includes a number of leading-edge RV industry components. The most obvious enhancement is the molded fibreglass front cap with LED accent lighting, blending perfectly with the high gloss fiberglass sidewalls. The sidewalls feature Azdel composite construction, which is lighter and more resistant to the elements than the conventional wood materials, and the exterior finish is infused with the colour, so the very attractive graphics should stand up to years of active service.
The upgrade package includes tinted windows and stainless-steel wheel inserts, adding a dressy and functional appeal to the vehicle.
In the Galley
The Leprechaun galley features a 3-burner cooktop, microwave, power range hood, and spacious refrigerator. Drawers are outfitted with roller bearing glides for ease of use, and the radius corner Thermofoil countertop and twin galley sinks add to the attraction of this campground gourmet galley. The cabinets throughout the coach feature raised panel, hardwood doors for the upper cabinets, and flat panel lower doors.
Sleeping Arrangements
The Leprechaun master bedroom area features a queen size bed – 60” x 80”, with bedspread. The J-dinette can be converted into a very comfortable auxiliary bed, and the 57” x 95” cabover bunk is certain to be a hit with the youngsters… in our test unit, the bunk featured a ladder and a child safety net, which are listed as options – but we think these should be standard equipment on any coach that has a cabover bunk.
In the Bathroom
The Leprechaun features a cozy, yet fully-equipped bathroom, with ABS moulded shower surround, foot-flush toilet, and power ceiling vent. The vanity has a sink with residential style single-lever faucet, and mirror. The skylight over the shower stall brightens the area very nicely, and the overall comfort of the bathroom design is excellent for a vehicle of this size.
Options
While the base model is designed to hit the road with a very affordable price tag, Coachmen offers a wide range of options to dress-up your Leprechaun. Among the favourite accessories that we would recommend are the in-dash stereo system, which includes a touch-screen display with Bluetooth and backup monitor, the 32” coach TV and DVD combination, and the exterior entertainment centre with 24” TV/DVD/Stereo and speakers. The Ford chassis version is available with a cockpit folding table, which is a very handy item – this is not offered in the Chevy 4500 chassis model.
Our test vehicle was equipped with optional slide-out awning and power vents in the cabover and bedroom areas. We also had the optional exterior camp kitchen table, which was convenient, but not up to the quality standards that would match the rest of the vehicle.
Comfort and Convenience
The Leprechaun 210 RS has a very efficient climate control system, with 20,000 BTU ducted furnace and a 13,500 BTU Ducted Roof A/C as standard equipment, controlled by a wall-mounted digital thermostat. There is a Coach Command Center where all of your RV systems can be monitored and controlled.
Our test coach was outfitted with the optional 15,000 BTU low profile roof air conditioner with heat pump – this is an excellent option for warmer climates when it is all you really need on a cool summer evening… when it gets colder, you just fire up the furnace for the full heating effect. The Coachmen Leprechaun features an Even-Cool A/C Ducting System which integrates the forced air heating and cooling vents into the walls and cabinetry. This keeps the floor free from ducts, so you can enjoy a very easily maintained RV.
Canadian Certification
The Leprechaun 210 RS on the Ford chassis complies with the CSA Z-240 RV standards, and the chassis has dual km/mph speedometer and daytime running lights. Documentation for the Chevy 4500 chassis version does not indicate this, which is one more reason why Canadian RV enthusiasts should deal with Canadian RV retailers.
The Bottom Line…
When it comes to comfort and convenience at an affordable price, this Leprechaun 210 RS motorhome is a fine example of RV innovation, from a manufacturer that has earned an excellent reputation for decades of quality construction at a reasonable price.
